The year was 1998, and the dot-com era was in full swing. Investors were anxious to sink their money into any startup related to technology. Startups were appearing and growing at an incredible pace. Soon, most would shrink and disappear with similar speed.

Meanwhile, Brian Sutherland and the founding Highland team had a startup idea of their own. It was also about technology, but because their idea had real merit the ensuing bubble burst did not affect it. Their idea was to make technologies and business process automation – then only available to enterprise class companies – accessible and affordable to small- and medium-sized businesses. And they would deliver these services without the bureaucracy, hassle and secret “code”? that typically accompanied IT. As it turned out, this was an idea with real staying power.

Today, Chicago-based Highland Solutions assesses and solves business issues — using technology as their tool — for companies of all sizes. With this focus on creating effective business systems, Highland developed into a full-service business and technology solutions firm, addressing a wide range of business needs: technical support, strategy, hosting, communications, data management and custom application development.
